In the package we find: the wireless keyboard (including battery), the USB wireless receiver (located inside the flap on the back of the Rii Mini X8), a micro USB cable for charging and the instruction manual.
The Rii Mini X8 is completely made of ABS plastic with the exception of the buttons that are made of rubber, it is still quite solid and well made. The layout is the classic QWERTY, very complete considering the small size of the keyboard, in fact the functions that can be reached through a combination of keys are very few and secondary. The keystroke is nice and you get accustomed rather quickly to its mini format, certainly you will not get the speed of a desktop keyboard, but a great compromise compared to a remote control or other keyboards in the same class.
In the upper half we find a touchpad (wider than the one on the predecessor) with multi-touch functions: single finger click simulates the left mouse button, while with two fingers the right button and sliding two fingers vertically you will get the scroll wheel. Rii wanted to please every type of user allowing it to perform the same functionality in different ways. In fact, for those who do not like the gestures there are still present physical left and right mouse buttons as well as a real clicky wheel (in red). We have also found the directional pad particularly useful.
On the back we find a rougher plastic in the grip area, which allows a firm grip and gives excellent ergonomics to the product. In the center there is a small compartment that houses the USB receiver and the removable battery.
Controls and functionality
The Rii Mini X8 is compatible with Windows, Mac OS, Linux, Android, PlayStation 4 (and 3), Xbox One (and 360) and Smart TV, making it one of the most versatile wireless compact keyboards on the market. Compared to the previous models, Rii tek decided to use a 2.4 wireless connection. The advantages are many: it doesn’t require any initial configuration, you just have to insert the receiver in any USB port, it doesn’t need any drivers and can immediately use all of its functionalities. This type of connection also improves the autonomy as it will allow us to turn off the keyboard, while watching videos or films.
The stand-by function avoids excessive consumption of battery life even if we forget it switched on. During our tests we used the keyboard with all the operating systems declared by the manufacturer and we were really amazed with its reliability.
The keyboard has 8 backlighting modes, quite pleasant and homogeneous: Rainbow (default), Red, Green, Blue, Indigo, Yellow and Purple, as well as the possibility to disable it.
The autonomy is definitely another positive note of this keyboard, the 300 mha battery in stand-by reaches 500 hours of autonomy, and exceeded two weeks of constant use without recharging it. It should also be remembered that the battery model is a BL-5B, the same battery used by Nokia on many of its old mobile phones and that even today is easily available on the market at a very low purchase price.
Calculating that streaming services such as Netflix, Now TV, Prime Video and YouTube, are getting ever so present inside our homes, and often difficult to use with a single remote control, the Rii Mini X8 is certainly a very interesting solution, as well as one of the best wireless compact keyboards on the market, thanks to its small size and without sacrificing any functionality.
In addition, thanks to its trackpad and keys that replicate the behavior of the mouse is particularly useful in a desktop environment, for example coupled with a Raspberry pi, thus providing the use of a linux distro without needing the classic keyboard and mouse. The same considerations apply to Android TV boxes and Smart TVs. The selling price of the Rii Mini X8 is on Amazon and it’s hard to find a better solution for a wireless keyboard that has always proved functional and reliable.
