Huawei wants to consolidate its position in the mid-range smartphone market and to do so the company decided to renew its P Smart lineup.
DESIGN: beautiful because it resembles the P20 series
We start immediately with the design of this Huawei P Smart 2019 because it changes compared to the previous generation. The new P Smart aesthetically approaches the P20 series with some soft curves on the sides and the “flashy” colors that are now typical of almost all Huawei devices. The phone will certainly not go unnoticed.
The P Smart 2019 is made out of polycarbonate that is rigid enough and feels immediately premium as soon as you pick it up, although it costs just (Check on Amazon.com). The smooth surface at the back never tends to slip. Too bad for the ease with which the device tends to scratch and the reflective coloring that tends to accentuate this fact.
The on/off button as well as the volume rocker are placed on the right side of the phone, as always, in a super convenient position for everyday use. The left side is complete without buttons while on the top we find the tray for the dual Nano-SIM or a MicroSD card for memory expansion, as well as a microphone. On the bottom, there is the grid for the speaker, a 3.5mm jack and unfortunately a MicroUSB port that should have been upgraded with the now-standard USB-C port. Pity.
The device is pleasing to the eye thanks to the increasingly reduced bezels and the increase of usable surface with the introduction of a small drip size notch that only houses the front camera. At the rear, we find a fingerprint sensor and a dual-sensor camera arranged vertically that protrudes ever so slightly above the body. Definitely a step forward compared to the previous model.
DISPLAY: drip notch and a lot of “screen”
The screen measures 6.2 inches in and has a Full HD+ resolution (2340×1080 pixels) in a stretch format (19.5:9). The IPS LCD panel could do a little better. In fact, the brightness level isn’t high enough and it even gets slightly lower results than the one in last year’s phone. Anyhow, unless you are are using the smartphone under direct sunlight the level of readability remains high.
Colors have a good balance and the user has the ability to change color temperature and choose between a “normal” and an “intense” color setting. The viewing angles are good and the content is readable from any angle without distortion.
Speaking of the display we can not fail to mention the new drip notch. Its main feature is to increase the usable screen area while maintaining the classic position of the front-facing camera.
The EMUI 9.0 lets the user modify this “notch” via software, darkening the side areas.
HARDWARE: only 3GB of RAM
The new P Smart 2019 is equipped with the latest processor created by the Chinese giant. We’re talking about the Kirin 710, an Octa-Core CPU capable of reaching up to 2.2GHz maximum clock speeds. In this case, and since this is a mid-range smartphone, the processor doesn’t come with a separate Neural Processing Unit like the Kirin 980. There is, however, an Artificial Intelligence algorithm able to let the device choose between performance and energy saving.
Too bad for the 3GB of RAM that doesn’t allow for any headroom while the device is under heavier loads. Fortunately, the new EMUI 9.0 with Android 9.0 Pie is less RAM demanding and the phone still manages to run smoothly in everyday use.
As for internal storage, we have 64GB of memory that can still be expanded with a microSD memory card up to 512GB. As for connectivity, the new Huawei P Smart 2019 has LTE support up to 300Mbps in download and 50Mbps in the upload. There is also Bluetooth 4.2 and GPS.
GRAPHIC INTERFACE: EMUI 9 with Android Pie
The Huawei P Smart 2019 runs Android 9.0 Pie out of the box, one of the most up-to-date devices in this price range. There are some proprietary apps such as calls and messages, while the custom settings menu is slightly modified compared to the past with fewer sub menus and some items located differently.
As always everything is quite intuitive with the possibility to use Gestures rather than the on-screen buttons to navigate between screens. Some third-party apps such as Facebook, eBay, and Amazon Shopping are pre-installed but can be completely removed.
CAMERAS: Dual and Improved
The Huawei P Smart 2019 tries to keep up with the competition by offering a dual-sensor camera system. It consists of a main 13MPx camera with f/1.8 focal aperture, plus a second 2MPx sensor for the bokeh effects in portrait mode. And do not underestimate the presence of the Artificial Intelligence that gives your shots a more professional touch in a completely automatic way.
The results? In our opinion, this is the best cameraphone in the mid-range.
Night photography reveals the limits of this device but the photo quality is still average.
The front camera has an 8MPx sensor with an f/2.0 focal aperture. The shots are in the norm with a good white balance and a good dynamic range. Videos can reach the maximum resolution of Full HD at 60 fps. The quality is good and the stabilization allows you to shoot good quality footage without much difficulty.
Autonomy: it increases by 400mAh and it shows
The new Huawei P Smart 2019 has a 3,400mAh battery that allows you to use the active screen for over 7 hours with a mixed-use between Wi-Fi and 4G network.
Moreover, the presence of a 10 Watt power adapter, allows for a complete charging time of just one and a half hours.
Conclusion
The Huawei P Smart 2019 is an improved device compared to the previous generation. At first glance, you can not fail to notice the resemblance to the P20 series thanks to the presence of a more rounded body but also for the brighter coloration. The renewed Kirin 710 processor guarantees excellent performance to an average user even with the presence of only 3GB of RAM. The display is bigger and that is also true for the body to screen ratio.
The price is undoubtedly the secret weapon of this Huawei P Smart 2019. We are talking about (Check on Amazon.com) and this will certainly attract many users looking for the best mid-range device in this 2019.
