iRobot Roomba 980 review: the robotic vacuum of our dreams

It’s expensive, but the iRobot Roomba 980 (Check on Amazon.com) is a fantastic robotic vacuum that offers extraordinary smart and hi-tech features.

The difference between the iRobot Roomba 980 and all other robot vacuum cleaners lies in its intelligence: where everything else just stops and fails miserably, this device uses its AI to get to and clean every corner of your home.

All features of this Roomba have been improved: size, functionality, app controls and even Wi-Fi connectivity.

Everyday cleaning

Although this is a device capable of performing 90% of its features in total autonomy, the iRobot Roomba 980 can be controlled manually via the app.

The iAdapt 2.0 navigation sensors allow the robot to move and clean every nook and cranny of the floor without crashing into the furniture or falling down the stairs. It will slam against the walls, but it will do it gently in order to better clean the corners.

The VSLam technology cleverly analyzes the layout of the house or apartment and creates some visual reference points. This technology helps the device keep track of the places it has already been, making its work more efficient.

Instead of bumping into the furniture, the Roomba 980 is smart enough to recognize the type of obstacle (table, chair, low cabinet) and advance slowly towards it so that it can clean as much area as possible.

With a diameter of 35.05cm, the Roomba 980 is slightly wider than a conventional vacuum cleaner, but thanks to its circular design and rotating body, it is able to reach most areas of the floor.

Performance

The iRobot Roomba 980 works beautifully on floors, tiles and other hard surfaces, but it actually amazed us with its performance on carpets. It can tell the difference between the hard floor and soft carpet and it will activate the AeroForce cleaning system, which can increase suction power tenfold.

The Roomba 980 has an autonomy of up to two hours, although it will return to its charging base when the container is full.

Final verdict

It is expensive (Check on Amazon.com) but also the best robotic vacuum on the market. Thanks to the precise mapping and auto navigation system, this model never ceases to amaze: it can observe the environment, recognize the obstacles, clean everything in under two hours, and return to its docking station.

Although the app could be better, every other part of the Roomba 980 is of the highest quality.
