UE Boom 2 Review

I recently got my hands on the Ultimate Ears Boom 2, or UE Boom 2 in short. At about (Check on Amazon.com), it is a great investment. You may have never heard of the Ultimate Ears brand, but you will definitely know Logitech, which acquired the company in 2008.

So, what are the winning features that make this UE Boom 2 a real best buy? Let’s find out in the review.

The EU Boom 2 is similar in design to its predecessor. It measures 6,7cm (2.63in) in diameter, 18cm (7in) in height, with a total weight of 544g (1.20lb) and features a 360° speaker. On the “front” there are three buttons for volume, power and Bluetooth pairing.

At the base of the speaker, we find the Micro USB port for charging and the 3.5mm aux port. The speaker is available in a range of colors.

The construction quality is noteworthy and the IPX7 certification means that the UE Boom 2 can survive underwater at a depth of 1m (3.3ft) for up to half an hour.

The UE Boom 2 is equipped with Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC. It can also connect with 2 different devices at the same time.

App & Microphone

Just like the first Boom, this second model offers an impressive set of features, but you need the complementary app to unlock them. The free “Boom by Ultimate Ears” app allows you to customize the sound performance (with the equalizer) or connect multiple Bluetooth speakers to each other for more volume.

In addition to this, the UE Boom 2 can also be used to chat with your friends on speakerphone, thanks to the built-in microphone. This feature really amazed me, the interlocutor never had problems hearing my voice, and I didn’t miss a single word.

How it sounds

The UE Boom 2 is definitely a speaker designed for outdoor use, maybe on the poolside during a party. It has a cylindrical vertical design and is at the same time compact and elegant, with a 360-degree audio output.

With two 45mm active drivers and two 45x80mm passive radiators, the maximum sound level is set at 90dB and has a frequency range from 90Hz to 20kHz. We tested a wide range of tracks, from classical music to metal. Sound quality is excellent, but we believe it is essential to make the most out of the equalizer in the app, in order to adapt the speakers’ output to each playlist.

Autonomy

The EU Boom 2 is powered by a non-removable lithium-ion battery. Ultimate Ears says that it has an autonomy of 15 hours.

According to us, this is an optimal value. I found out that the UE Boom 2 can be used for 15 hours, but this only at low volume. At normal volume, the EU Boom 2 generally lasts between 10 and 11 hours. This is still a pretty impressive achievement.

Verdict

Within a competitive market offering a wide range of devices, the UE Boom 2 is truly up to par with the competition. You can use it anywhere – even in the shower – and the many extra features you can unlock with the EU app can make your life easier.

Yes, there are portable Bluetooth speakers that you can buy for €20-30, but if you are willing to spend a little more you will really notice the difference. If we consider the current price of (Check on Amazon.com) it automatically becomes the best buy.
