Xiaomi Mi A2 review

The Xiaomi Mi A2 (Check on Amazon.com) is no unexpected surprise. The smartphone follows quite faithfully what we have seen so far with the Xiaomi Mi 6X. Let’s find out if this Android One smartphone is up to its best-selling predecessor.

Package

Package

The package of this Mi A2 contains a 5V/2A power adapter (with fast charging but not QuickCharge 3.0), a USB/USB-C cable, a semi-transparent black silicone cover and a USB-C to 3.5mm audio jack adapter.

Build and Ergonomics

Build and Ergonomics

This Mi A2 is really a newer, better Mi 6X. The shell is entirely made of metal. Despite the large size, the smartphone is not slippery at all. It doesn’t have a particularly innovative design but remains pleasant. Too bad for the rear camera that protrudes a lot. The physical keys (power and volume rocker) on the right side function quite well and have no assembly problems.

Hardware

Hardware

The processor is a 2.2GHz octa-core Snapdragon 660 that combines with an Adreno 512 GPU, 4GB of RAM and the internal memory that starts from 32 and goes all the way up to 64GB. There is also a model that comes with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal memory. The amount of internal memory is important, considering how this smartphone cannot equip a microSD card. You can use a secondary NanoSim instead. The connectivity is good with LTE up to 600 Mbps, Wi-Fi ac dual-band and Bluetooth 5.0. The only thing really missing is the NFC chip.

On the front of the smartphone, we find a small white notification LED, while the fingerprint reader has now been moved to the rear and is precise and quick to unlock. Unfortunately, this time around, there is no audio jack. The IR blaster, however, survived the cut.

Cameras

Cameras

The Xiaomi Mi A2 is equipped with a dual camera of 12 and 20 megapixels, both ƒ/1.75. In this case, the second camera, in addition to the blur effect, is used for low-light photos, thanks to its larger pixels and the implementation of pixel binning technology that combines 4 pixels in one in order to capture more light. The results of this pair of sensors are really good and they produce enjoyable photos, with good color balance (thanks also to HDR), good resolution and good speed. Even in low light conditions, the photos are very enjoyable.

The front-facing 20-megapixel camera with an aperture of ƒ/2.2 is also good. Videos can be recorded up to 4K resolution at 30 fps. The recorded videos have good quality and good color rendering, although in 4K resolution the electronic stabilization is practically absent and therefore they suffer greatly from movement.

The 5.99-inch IPS display has an 18:9 format and Full HD+ resolution (2160×1080 pixels). It has good brightness and vibrant colors. We were pleased with this display although it is not the most incisive we have seen in recent months.

Software

Software

The real difference between this Xiaomi Mi A2 and the 6X is the presence of Android One. The performance is great, the Mi A2 is definitely one of the fastest smartphones in the mid-range.

Autonomy

Autonomy

The 3010mAh battery surprised us a lot. It is not big enough, at least on paper, and we were quite skeptical about it. However, it can easily last for a full day. It also supports Quick Charge 3.0.

Price

The Xiaomi Mi A2 has an attractive price (Check on Amazon.com), but it isn’t cheap.

Final Verdict

The Xiaomi Mi A2 is the perfect evolution of the Mi A1. It has a larger display, improved dual cameras and a more powerful processor. Too bad for the expandable memory and the audio jack.
