The world of security cameras is growing and smart cameras are growing too. Since the use is very different from person to person, it is important to catalog them in a list and compare them, so that you can understand which is the best security camera for your needs.

What is a security cam and what is an IP Cam

Many people associate IP cams with the concept of security regarding their own Homes. Their name comes from the fact that to navigate their interface you only need to access their IP. In the past, IP cameras have become very common and many can be accessed directly from the internet.

Nowadays IP cams are less and less popular and almost all the security cameras that you will find in this article are not IP cams but smart surveillance cams, that can be accessed via the web and/or their app.

These security cams are much more advanced than the old IP cams and that’s why we prefer them over IP cams.

How do we choose a smart surveillance camera?

Further down you will find a list of devices that have received a good rating in our reviews and that all have good common features such as:

  • Quality Construction: it is important to understand how a surveillance camera is made, whether it can then easily be put out or if it hides easily
  • Lag-free video streaming: self-explanatory
  • Functionality: Each camera offers different features for different uses
  • Alert accuracy: it is paramount to receive precise notifications in case of suspicious movements

Yi Dome

Yi Dome (Check on Amazon.com) is perhaps the most interesting product in this selection because it combines the simplicity of the app with the ability to rotate its head in any direction. It is also possible to make the camera follow any movement it detects.

Foscam R2

In this roundup, the R2 (Check on Amazon.com) is the only real IP cam, which can be controlled not only through its app but also through IP and any video surveillance software that supports IP cams. It is, therefore, one of the most flexible in terms of functionality for those who have experience with this type of camera. It sports a MicroSD slot and a motorized head that you can move any way you want.

Netatmo Welcome

Welcome (Check on Amazon.com) is not perfect but has many bright ideas. The design is elegant and can easily be mistaken for a generic piece of furniture in your living room. It’s easy to set up and the video stream is smooth even with slow network speeds. This room is also the cheapest in the long term since it’s the only one that saves videos locally and does not have a cloud service. Welcome is also the only camera in this list that detects faces and indicates the name of the person even if not always perfect.

Nest Cam Indoor/Outdoor

The Nest Cams (Check on Amazon.com) (made by Nest, a Google company) is without a doubt among the most interesting products in this segment. They are made in two versions: for the inside or for the outside. They work exactly the same and are quality products that promptly report each movement they detect and automatically switch on or off according to our presence in the area. Without a Nest Aware Subscription, however many of their most interesting capabilities seize to function. Keep that in mind.

Netgear Arlo Q

Arlo Q (Check on Amazon.com) may have the defect of promptly being recognizable as a security cam, but it can (unlike other products) be positioned high up thanks to the wall-mounted screw base. Arlo Q offers excellent video quality (even in the dark), a slightly clunky but very powerful app, and very precise notifications. Throughout our tests it has proven to be the most accurate camera when detecting suspicious movements, fully understanding when an “authorized” tenant was at home, thanks to geolocation.

Nest Cam IQ

Nest Cam IQ is definitely not a product for everyone, mainly for its price. However, it is the only one with a 4K camera that can shoot Full HD video that can be used to zoom on people’s faces without loss of definition.

Nest Cam IQ Outdoor

The outdoor version of the Nest Cam IQ (Check on Amazon.com) is more than a waterproofed variant. It’s bigger, safer, with a new wall mount and a much more powerful speaker that can deter an intruder.

Netgear Arlo Pro 2

Arlo Pro 2 (Check on Amazon.com) is definitely the best wireless camera system around. It has a two-way audio system, a 6-month rechargeable battery, and a built-in siren. You can add more cameras to your basic setup and these devices are also waterproof. The only drawback is the price.
